Talking about salary in Sweden

6 min läsning

Swedish salary conversations are less aggressive than in many markets — but that does not mean you should accept the first number.

Sweden has a reputation for flat pay, and there is truth in it: the spread between junior and senior salaries is narrower than in the US or UK. But there is still room, and candidates routinely leave money on the table by not asking. Know the number first Fackförbund (union) salary statistics are the best public source in Sweden — Unionen, Sveriges Ingenjörer, Akavia and others publish salary reports by role, experience and region. They are more reliable than international salary sites, which rarely reflect Swedish levels. When you are asked Recruiters usually ask for an expectation in the first call. Give a range and anchor the top of it to your evidence: "Based on the union statistics for my role and years, I am looking at X to Y." Refusing to answer entirely reads as evasive here. Monthly, not annual Swedish salaries are discussed as månadslön — gross monthly. Say 52 000 kr, not 624 000 kr. What else is negotiable Holiday above the legal 25 days, pension contribution (occupational pension, tjänstepension, is a real part of your compensation), remote days, competence budget, and start date. On a tight salary band, these move more easily than the base. Collective agreement If the employer has kollektivavtal, some terms — pension, overtime, parental pay top-up — are already set and quite good. If they do not, ask explicitly what their pension contribution is. That gap is worth real money. After you join Swedish salary revision (lönerevision) happens annually, usually in spring. Your starting number compounds through every one of those, which is why the first conversation matters more than it feels like it does.
