Job hunting in Stockholm
6 min läsning
What the Stockholm market looks like right now, which sectors hire, and practical notes on commuting, housing and language.
Stockholm is the largest job market in Sweden by a wide margin, and the most international.
Who hires
Tech and fintech (Klarna, Spotify, and a long tail of smaller product companies), professional services, public sector, life science around Solna and Hagastaden, and a very large consultancy sector. Consultancies are the most common entry point for newcomers: they hire more continuously and worry less about your network.
Language
Stockholm has the highest share of English-speaking workplaces in the country, concentrated in tech and startups. Outside those, Swedish is often required in practice even where the listing does not say so. If a listing states svenska as a requirement, it usually means it. Where a listing says nothing, treat the language requirement as unknown rather than assuming either way — and ask in the screening call.
Geography
Most offices are in the inner city, Solna, Kista (tech and telecom) or Sundbyberg. The commuter rail and metro make a 30-45 minute commute normal, so do not filter to only the central postcode.
Housing
This is the hard part. The first-hand rental queue is measured in years, so most newcomers start with a second-hand (andrahand) contract. Have this in motion before you accept an offer with a fixed start date.
Timing
Hiring is busiest from mid-January to early June, and again from mid-August to November. December and July are slow.
